Insulin for bodybuilding shows up exactly once in my book, as a single line in the Mass Blast Protocol: Lantus, 30 IU once a day. It sits at Level 5, the top of the Natty Spectrum. Law 5 of the book uses it as the main example: insulin can build slabs of muscle or send you into a coma. This page explains both sides. It covers what insulin does, what the research shows, why the book uses a long-acting insulin, and the blood sugar rules you need before you get anywhere near it.
Your pancreas releases insulin when you eat, especially after carbs. Insulin then tells your cells to pull sugar out of your blood. In muscle, that sugar gets stored as glycogen, which is what makes a muscle look full. Also, insulin slows down the breakdown of muscle protein.
But muscle is not the only place insulin sends that energy. It also tells fat cells to store, and it blocks fat release. That is why Chapter 11 of the book puts insulin lowering on the fat loss side, while the Mass Blast pushes it up.
So the same hormone works both ways. Context decides which way it goes, and that is Law 5.
Most compounds in the book give you warning signs before they hurt you. Blood pressure rises slowly, lipids show up on a lab sheet, and you have weeks to react. Insulin is different, because too much of it can drop your blood sugar in a few hours. When that happens, your brain runs out of fuel.
The official Lantus label says it plainly: low blood sugar is the most common side effect, and severe episodes can cause seizures and death [1].
Meanwhile, the medical literature has the bodybuilding cases. In one report, a 31-year-old bodybuilder dieting for a contest was found unconscious at home after using fast-acting insulin [2]. In Australia, a coroner’s inquest looked at another 31-year-old who died of low blood sugar in a gym. He had a rapid-acting insulin pen bought online, and he had never told his doctors he used it [3].
I ran experiments with insulin, along with steroids, peptides, growth hormone and IGF. That is exactly why the book keeps it at Level 5 and puts a warning right next to the dose.
The book says insulin can build slabs of muscle. The research shows how. A 2016 meta-analysis pooled the human studies on insulin and muscle protein [4]. It found two things:
In other words, insulin for bodybuilding works as a partner to food. It protects the muscle you have and lets protein and carbs do their job. Without the food, you get the risk and none of the growth. That is why the Mass Blast pairs it with 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per pound and 500 to 1,000 grams of carbs a day.
