Collagen peptides dosage and the collagen triple helix

The collagen peptides dosage in my book is 10 to 20 grams a day. It shows up in the gut repair protocol, the longevity protocols and the hair bonus. Collagen is the most common protein in your body, and it’s the main material of tendons, ligaments, skin and the gut lining. The supplement gives you the building blocks. Some of what it’s sold for has good data, and some doesn’t. This page covers the dose by goal, the timing that matters, and a straight look at the studies.

  • The book’s collagen peptides dosage is 10 to 20 grams a day. Gut repair uses 15 grams; the hair protocol uses 10 to 15.
  • For tendons and ligaments, take it about an hour before training, with vitamin C. That’s how the best tendon study did it.
  • Joint pain data is decent. The skin data is disputed. Gut and hair data is thin.
  • Collagen doesn’t count toward your protein target. It’s missing an essential amino acid.
  • It’s one of the safest things in the book. If you’ve had kidney stones, talk to your doctor first.

What Collagen Peptides Are

Collagen peptides, also called hydrolyzed collagen, are collagen broken down into short chains so they dissolve in water and absorb easily. They come from cow hide, pig skin or fish skin.

As the Glossary puts it, they provide glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, the amino acids your body uses to build connective tissue. After you drink them, those amino acids rise in your blood within about an hour [2].

However, your body doesn’t put the collagen you drink straight into your knees. Instead, it breaks it down and uses the pieces, plus signals from training, to build new collagen where it’s needed.

The Collagen Peptides Dosage in the Book

The book is consistent here. First, gut repair, Phase 1, uses 15 grams a day of Type I/III. Then the longevity chapter, my 80/20 Protocol and the Forever Protocol all use 10 to 20 grams. Finally, the hair bonus uses 10 to 15 grams, in the morning or after training.

So the working collagen peptides dosage is 10 to 20 grams a day. Also, most of the human studies sit in the same range.

The Skin Question

Skin is the main reason people buy collagen, and it’s also where the evidence is most disputed.

In 2025, a meta-analysis pooled 23 randomized trials with 1,474 people. Overall, collagen seemed to improve skin hydration and elasticity. However, when the authors kept only the high-quality trials, or only the trials not paid for by the industry, the effect disappeared [1]. Still, the industry pushed back, pointing out that most of those trials used low doses of about 3 grams a day.

So here’s where I land: collagen may help your skin, especially at full doses, but don’t buy it for skin alone. For skin, the book leans on GHK-Cu and the crosslink pathway in Chapter 14.
